These all look to you to give them their food in due season; when you give to them, they gather it up .-- Psalm 104:27

Mount Saint Benedict CSA garden

Mission Tomatoes in the high tunnel garden

The mission of the Mount Saint Benedict CSA Garden is to “Honor all creation by respecting the land through a Community Supported Agriculture Garden in a contemplative environment.”

Goals

• To supply environmentally-friendly and holistic food to people of the region.

• To promote land stewardship by engaging in sustainable farming practices.

• To educate children in regard to self-sustainability, healthy food and self-discipline.

• To preserve an historic aspect of the community and to educate the community by developing a heritage type farm that promotes Minnesota eco-tourism.

About the garden

The Mount Saint Benedict CSA Garden is dedicated to meeting the regional demand for locally-grown, organic, fresh produce and providing it at an affordable price. We also are committed to educating children about the local food economy and sustainable agriculture practices. The challenge is that there is not enough fresh organic produce available to all residents of the Red River Valley region.

In addition to the 13 acre garden, the University of Minnesota Crookston has a high tunnel garden on site. Above is a photo of tomatoes in the high tunnel garden. Cucumbers and tomatoes were harvested in June from this garden -- two months earlier than usual.

The garden project has several organizational relationships in the community through the University of Minnesota Northwest Regional Sustainable Development Partnership; University of Minnesota, Crookston; North Country Food Bank; Hugo’s Grocery Stores; Amazing Grains Natural Food Market; Crookston School District; Kairos House; Care and Share Center; and the Crookston Parks and Recreation Department.
