Tennebrae is a beautiful prayer service that includes the celebration of both matins and lauds. The candelabra begins with fourteen candles and a white Christ candle in the middle. As prayer progresses, candles are extinguished one by one until nearly the end of prayer when only the Christ candle is lit. This candle is then removed from chapel, prayers are said, and then it is returned and extinguished.
